News/Game Reports

8/1/07 - U11 Team suffers extra innings loss in District Final The West Bend Little League U11 National League team won its first six Little League International District Playoff games only to lose in the final to the Elmbrook Nationals 12-9 in nine innings. After allowing Elmbrook to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, the Bulldogs managed to get within one at 3-2 heading into the 3rd inning. Elmbrook again got their bats out and plated three runs before West Bend tied the score with 4 runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Elbrook scored three more runs over the next couple innings and took a 9-7 lead into the bottom of the sixth. The Bulldogs 'never give up' attitude allowed them to score the two runs they needed when Andrew Duening and Derek Hall each singled and eventually scored to tie the score 9-9 heading into extra innings. Most everyone present felt that West Bend won the game in the bottom of the 7th when Kolton Young scored (or didn't according to the home plate ump) on a passed ball that the pitcher dropped as he tried to apply the tag. Video evidence later showed that the ball ended up rolling away from the pitcher and all the way to the backstop. The home plate umpire, who was out of position, refused to acknowledge the Bulldog Managers adamant request to defer the call to the 3rd base umpire, who looked quite eager to change it to the right call, and that was it for West Bends dynamic 2007 season. It was obviously frustrating to end the season this way, but each and every player should be proud of the effort they put in together as a team throughout the entire post-season. We will have to see what next year brings for this fine group of boys.

6/25/07 - U11 Team Wins Elmbrook Tourney The West Bend Little League U11 National League team won the Elmbrook Baseball Association tournament after defeating host Brookfield in the championship game yesterday afternoon 5-1. After winning all five games they played over the weekend, the team improved their season record to 7-1 as they await the decision of Little League International on when and where the District playoffs will be played. The Bulldogs started the tournament with a resounding 15-4 victory over North Shore on Saturday morning. Derek Hall led the way offensively going 3-4 with a double, three runs scored and three RBI. Kyle Krier was also 3-4 (three singles) and Alex Haese, Andrew Duening and Ian Loveland had two hits apiece. Jake Duening started on the mound and took the win after not allowing any runs over two innings while striking out three. The Bulldogs faced the West Bend American League team in the second game and there was quite an offensive battle as the National League team came away with a 21-19 victory. Offensively, Quinn Steinmetz was 3-3 (5 runs scored), Andrew Gonring was 2-2 (Double) and Hall (5RBI, Triple), Haese (2RBI) and Jake Duening (2RBI, Double, Triple) each were 2-3 in the pre-4th of July fireworks display. Hall was the winning pitcher in relief of Steinmetz. Next up was the semi-final game against a strong Milwaukee Bombers club. The Bulldogs took an early 2-0 lead after Steinmetz led off with a walk and Haese promply followed with a base hit. After a groundout, Hall singled in both Steinmetz and Haese. The Bombers came back in the bottom of the frame to tie the score 2-2. The West Bend team finally took command in the top of the 4th with the score tied 3-3 when Andrew Duening drove in a run with a two out double to make it 4-3 Bulldogs. Hall then came up and drilled a 2-2 pitch off the front of a truck that was parked in the center field parking lot for a two run homer that gave the Bulldogs the insurance runs they needed to secure 7-4 victory and a spot in the championship game against the host Brookfield team. In the final game, West Bend again took an early 2-0 lead highlighted by singles from Haese and Andrew Duening. The score stayed the same until the Bulldogs scored again in the top of the fourth when Jake Duening reached on an error and moved to second on a wild pitch. Krier then sacrificed him to third with a bunt and Loveland followed up with another bunt to plate Duening and make the score 3-0. Brookfield managed to avert a shutout by scoring one run in the bottom of the inning before West Bend countered with a run each in the fifth and sixth to make it 5-1 Bulldogs.
